Although much of the published research about neurodegenerative diseases is
difficult to fully comprehend, we are following it and will relay what we learn
about it on this page. If you become aware of pertinent research, or are a
scientist working on MJD, please let us know via e-mail, phone or fax.

This article discussed the potential of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1)
to induce recovery in an animal model of cerebellar ataxia. When rats
rendered ataxic were treated with IGF-1, certain damaged neurons were
rescued to various degrees, depending on the time that treatment with IGF-1
was started. The results of this research (according to the abstract)
suggest that human ataxia could possibly be treated with IGF-1 by a simple
procedure.

June 12, '98 Cell (6): 939-949 MJD researchers, Drs.
Paulson, Warrick, Bonini et. al. have created a fly model of MJD, which
according to Paulson, should help them identify relevant modifying genes.
This may lead to therapies in the future.
